Aspiring Scientist, Lifelong Learner

Hello! My name is Bethany Mostert and I am a Canadian citizen conducting graduate studies at North Carolina State University in Plant Biology. This blog is a way for me to share some of my research experiences and my take on how science is conducted and how it can be improved upon. Here, I feature both written posts and podcasts.

You may note that I have referred to myself as "the phyllosopher" here on this website, and while it may be true that I greatly enjoy Greek pastry, my understanding of the root "phyllo" is purely a botanical one-- phyllo here meaning, "leaf". Of course, my substitution of "philo" for "phyllo" in the word philosopher unfortunately alters the meaning. I am now a 'leaf knowledge' rather than a 'lover of knowledge', but maybe that is just what this blog needs. Robin Wall Kimmerer, the best-selling Potawatomi author of Braiding Sweetgrass, intimately discusses the "knowledge of plants". Considering she is one of my scientific icons, perhaps it is fitting then that I approach my writings through 'leaf knowledge' instead of through the love of knowledge.
